Newkirk argues that the writers of the Common Core have adopted a sterile view of reading that does not take into account the transactional nature. Readers read to understand first and then, after they have comprehended the text, inject their own opinions and connections, etc. Newkirk says this misguided view will lead to the kinds of instruction that might be less than inspiring. Here is a movie I made about the state of Michigan's definition of reading. Notice how much more interactive and complex this definition is.
