All One or Alone: A New Years Message

A Lone gunman entered….That is a haunting  phrase we hear all the time when media first encounters a shooter in a building. It is one of those familiar catch phrases that desensitize us to the insanity of modern life in America. Just another lone gunman.

Only recently, as we began to unravel the unthinkable tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary school, did it’s true meaning take shape.    The space between the first two words should not be there. Alone is the world…

A Ballad for My Students

It may seem corny or even creepy

But I have loved you since I first saw your name

Printed on white paper.

Permanently etched in my mind:

Henrietta Jones, Erin Plasiance, Maya Jones,

Christopher Holloway, Justin Jack, Kierra Hart --

The list is infinite.

Even when your names escape my tongue,

Your prepubescent faces remain.

Stained upon my heart. Unchanged by time.

There is just something about a teacher's students.

Once assigned to a… Continue

No Child Left Within

No Child Left Within

Paul Epstein, November, 2009

I had too much test today

Need some time outside to play

Get homework done before I can

Math, Spelling, read about England

What don’t kill me make me strong

My mom says they teach me wrong

Big boys outside dealin’ drugs

They got bling, we got bedbugs

Don’t want to be child left behind

But sick to death of daily grind

They say school a waste of time

No decent jobs… Continue

Teachers, Masters of the Universe

Some of my favorite memories as a child were playing games with my family.

Saturday night in the summertime was the best. Dad would break out the snacks and Grandma and Grandpa would come over and play Scrabble, Boggle, or cards (Pinochle, Euchre, or Uno). I vividly remember playing games for hours on end because I often missed my favorite show line-ups of the evening: Love Boat, Fantasy Island, and The Twilight Zone.

In my eyes, Grandma… Continue

Barry Needs Help with Cover Idea

Hey DW Ningers. I am working on an alternative cover idea for my new version of Hooked on Meaning. This would be a second cover for the book that goes on the title page. I have this great idea using the Hulk photo. Trouble is the Hulk, who symbolizes testing and all the anxiety it brings, is about to crush me. I have to be thinking or saying something to augment the reality of the image and create both truth and humor and convey the message of the project: Imagination, fun and writing beats… Continue

World's Best Writing Prompts/World's Worst Writing Prompts

I know what you are thinking. The best writing prompt is anything you want to write about. Choice rules! But a great writing prompt can illicit amazing writing and stir up stagnant thinking. Photos and music can also fall under the heading writing prompt. This blog is a place for us to share our successes and failures with writing prompts.

Here is one of my favorites. It is in my book "The Healing Pen."

Write an express letter to some in your family or in your past. An… Continue

Obama believes in Merit Pay: Do YOU???

Today the president made a speech on education and raised the issue of merit pay as a way of improving teaching. The logic goes that you reward the teachers that have the most success. My experience has been that merit pay divides teachers and erodes collegiality. I am not a classroom teacher now,so I would like to know what you think.
