Write to Read/Read to Write

The connection is so direct and interconnected that it defies logic so many teachers don't take advantage of it. They get hung up in having kids memorize spelling lists rather than teaching them to spell through the powerful innate desire to communicate. Teacher, teacher, guess what? Write it, Johnny. But how do you spell birthday? What sound does it start with, Johnny? B! Then what? Unblend, b-er-th-d-a...brthda! I did it, I wrote, tda mi brthda! Wonderful, Johnny. Would you like to make a…See More

Profile Information

How would you describe your work?
I've been teaching for over twenty years at the elementary level. I'm currently a reading specialist with a computer lab that students use for writing, among myriad other things. I'm involved with the Central WV Writing Project and the National Writing Project.
Did I mention that I'm a songwriter, a guitar and fiddle player, and that I've made 4 CD's, three as a solo artist and one with my band, the Contrarians? Here are some links:

No Child Left Within

No Child Left Within

Paul Epstein, November, 2009

I had too much test today

Need some time outside to play

Get homework done before I can

Math, Spelling, read about England

What don’t kill me make me strong

My mom says they teach me wrong

Big boys outside dealin’ drugs

They got bling, we got bedbugs

Don’t want to be child left behind

But sick to death of daily grind

They say school a waste of time

No decent jobs… Continue

Welcome Paul. Great to have you here! You'll find some of your homies here. Jason Lilly is one of our bright lights. I love his heartfelt rant "One of those Days.." and his Tao of Writing group.

I have a wonderful manuscript of yours sitting in a drawer here for a year or so. I tried e-mailing you a while back but it bounced. Did you find a publisher? Send me a message and I can point you in a direction or two.

Again, great to have you here.
