Thanks for the suggestions. They both sound wonderful.  The kind of books you live with and get inside you.

Thought I'd comment on two books that I read recently and absolutely loved. Lauren Groff's recent novel Arcadia kinda broke my heart. The main character Bit is a rare creature - an empathic male who doesn't run from crisis, but is the one who stays and takes care of things. Half of the novel is set in the 1970 on a commune in upstate NY and the second half later, after Bit has grown up and is living in NYC. I think Groff was writing "in the zone" when she did this one. It's so beautiful.

The other is Black Swan Green by David Mitchell. Nothing like Cloud Atlas, it covers a year in the life of a 13 year old growing up in the eponymous village in Gloucestershire who suffers from stammering. Semi-autobiographical (Mitchell is a stammerer), I just didn't want this book to end. So I went out and bought three copies for friends to read.

My 4th grade class is reading A Boy at War by Mazer. At home I have just finished the Hunger Games Trilogy. Loved it! I'm in search for my next great read.

I just finished Lisa Genova's book, Left Neglected. I could not put it down until I finished it. I am also reading Kelly Gallagher's Deeper Reading. I am looking forward to experimenting on my classes with his suggestions. :-D

I am reading The Hunger Games trilogy right now. I have The Story of Edgar Sawtelle waiting for me, as well as Drive. So many books, so little time!

Hi Roland

Nice to hear from you and I hope all is well?

I love Richard Ford's turn of phrase. Made me laugh out loud on the packed commuter train this evening. Anything that does that is a good read in my opinion.

I'm going to buy Independence Day and put it on my shelf too!

And I'll look out for Cloud Atlas and Stone Gods.

Yes, I've read it, Miles. I really didn't like it at first - I think I didn't like the main character -  but by the time I got to the end, I thought it was a terrific novel.

I've also read the third in the trilogy - The Lay of the Land, which is also good, but not as good. Perversely, I haven't yet read the second one, although unlike the other two I actually own a copy! Independence Day is reputed to be the best of the three.

I'm reading David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas at the moment. Another amazing book. And not long ago I read Jeannette Winterson's The Stone Gods (which looks as though it was influenced by one section of Mitchell's novel). Borrowed it from the public library and liked it so much I went out and bought a copy for myself.

Anyone read "The Sportswriter" by Richard Ford? I'm three-quarters through and think it is amazing.

I'm currently enjoying Robert McKee's Story, a book on screenwriting. This man knows his craft: he takes you inside story design and shows you through powerful illustrations why a certain movie moves you. It's all about story, which is a metaphor for living. Besides helping me with my screenwriting, this will help me teach literature more effectively with my kids this year.
