GREAT NEWS FLASH...................GAIL AND JOAN JOINED THE DW NING AS G AND J
THEY WILL CHECK IN FROM TIME TO TIME TO HELP DISCUSS THEIR BOOKS.

In The CAFE Book, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser present a practical, simple way to integrate assessment into daily reading and classroom discussion. The CAFE system, based on research into the habits of proficient readers, is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding vocabulary. The system includes goal-setting with students in individual conferences, posting of goals on a whole-class board, developing small-group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and targeting whole-class instruction based on emerging student needs.

Gail and Joan developed the CAFE system to support teachers as they:

organize assessment data so it truly informs instruction;
track each child's strengths and goals, thereby maximizing time with him or her;
create flexible groups of students, all focused on a specific reading strategy;
and help students remember and retrieve the reading strategies they learned.
The CAFE system does not require expensive materials, complicated training, or complete changes to current classroom literacy approaches. Rather, it provides a structure for conferring with students, a language for talking about reading development, and a system for tracking growth and fostering student independence. The CAFE system's built-in flexibility allows teachers to tailor the system to reflect the needs of their students and their state's standards. And it's a perfect complement to The Daily Five, "The Sisters" influential first book, which lays out a structure for keeping all students engaged in productive literacy work for every hour of every classroom.

Going to see them this summer, looking forward to it, also pre-ordered their new text!
I started using the CAFE menu in my classroom this year and I LOVE it, I previewed the book online, but can not wait to get it in hand so I can really use it! So excited the two sisters joined!! :)
This is the second year that I have been using the Daily 5 in my 2nd grade classroom (with GREAT success!). I had the opportunity to hear "the Sisters" at CCIRA (Denver, CO) in February, but I have been so overwhelmed trying to figure out our new (scripted) readiing program that trying to adopt the CAFE menu mid-year was just too much. The "Big Brown Truck" delivered my copy of The Cafe Book yesterday, I've devoured the first four chapters, and I can't WAIT for next year! I am particularly grateful for the Launching Sequence included in the Appendix ...
Hi ZG, Gail and Joan here - we are so jealous that the big brown truck already brought your copy! We are waiting to have our very own (not too patiently either!!) Thanks for your support. Good luck with the scripted program.
Question for Gail and Joan or anybody,

How do we work your wonderful system of teaching or real into a scripted reading program that they tell us we have to do?
G and J ...
I LOVE your new book! I finished it Saturday afternoon ... I have a question about the touch points. These are demonstartions that a child is understanding a skill or strategy. Are you recording multiple demonstrations in one day or over a period of days with different texts?
Also, do you chart strategy groups for students or just the one-on-one conferences?
Thanks for sharing!
ZG

My copy just arrived Thursday. This is my first year with Daily Five and I have been waiting to start Cafe. The book has made so much of what I have been reading on the website an "ah-ha"! We are off for spring break next week, but I can't wait to go to school on Monday and get my bulletin board ready. I teach second and have taught many of the strategies already this year. Don't you think I could put up the strategies on the bulletin board and review them to be sure of mastery? My kids are mostly reading above grade level. I want to have some experience with the conferences, etc at the end of this year with a familiar class so I can be ready to go next year!
Cathy- I started my cafe mid-year (in my second gr. class) to get a "feel" for it and found it to take shape with ease....the kids also LOVE it, the visual is so great for both the teacher and student, I would dive right in! You'll love conferencing!! (But I'm certainly no "expert" :)

My students have gained so much as learners this year after I adopted the Daily 5 framework for my classroom. Not wanting to take on something and not do it right/justice, I have gradually worked it into my routine with Read to Self and Read to Someone. My students cheer when it is time for language arst workshop time! After the school year is over, I look forward to refelcting on my successes and preparing for adding more parts to my schedule next year. Of course, CAFE is on my must read list!
I have had the most awesome week of teaching reading! CAFE was a huge hit with my kids and ME!! I began the week telling them we were going to review our reading skills for third grade and I wanted them to conference with me and set goals. Boy, did they take this seriously! They all want to conference every day, they love sharing their new Expand Vocabulary words and posting them. They are walking around with dictionaries and thesauruses! They are amazing! On Friday one girl asked me "We have a conference set up for Tuesday but I will be on a field trip with Program Challenge, can we meet on Monday?" WOW, she remembered and could not wait to share her progress on her goal! I have conferenced in the past and talked with students about their reading but I have not put the focus on their personal goal setting and follow up. How have I missed something so obvious!! Thanks, Gail and Joan!
