I teach 4th grade in a district that has a required reading list for each grade level. One of our novels is Number the Stars. I have put together several picture books about the Holocaust to build background knowledge for my students. I have had no problems with parents about the subject matter, only concerns that some children really become obsessed with the topic and can't find enough to read about the Holocaust. An outstanding documentary on DVD is " 6,000,00 Paper Clips."

Fred Gross wrote a book titled "A Step ahead of Hitler" I met Fred Gross at the Jewish Community Center in Louisville. He wrote this book from a Jewish child's perspective as he was dodging the German's in France. It is a riviting novel and takes a look at the holocaust from a child's perspective. He never went to a camp but was moved from several foster homes. It might be a novel to pick up and read. I know that it is on my reading list. Also another great novel that I read in College is "Lest Innocent Blood be Shed" and a great book for kids are "Boy in the Stripped Pajammas and If I Should Die Before I Wake".

What grade level is your curriculum for? I took a college level course on Holocaust literature and we used an excellent anthology titled Art from the Ashes. I think it would also be acceptable for a high school level course. It contains nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and even some drama, all related to the Holocaust, written mostly by survivors. If you can believe it, there is even some humorous literature (dark humor, of course). The most unique is the story "This Way to the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen". Check it out.

FOr a ten year old, Carol Matas' stories might be a good start. If he is more mature than that, try Donna Joy Napoli's Stones in Water, the story of an Italian boy conscripted by the NAzi's. That is a survival story.
I am creating a curriculum for a class I am teaching this fall entitled Reading the Holocaust. I want to explore the range of experiences during the Holocaust through literature. I have a lot of titles, especially about the Jewish experience. Anyone have titles that explore some of the lesser known victims?

I have always been interested in the holocaust and I have read 2 or 3 books but nothing that stands out as an unknown. Best one...Anne Frank's Dairy but that was when she was in hiding.

Favor - can you guys post a grade level range when you post about a new book. I have a 10 year son and would like to start introducing him to the topic. I have been to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam but he can't relate to the importance of it when I talk about it and I would like to read and discuss the topic with him. Thanks!
