Guidelines for Giving Helpful Criticism by Barry Lane
1) Read as a curious reader not a fixer. Tell your reader reaction.
2) Start with something positive but be SPECIFIC.
3) Be kind and honest. But lean towards kind. Without face to face communication it is easy to hurt feelings when you don't intend to. This is a place where writers support each other, not tear each other down. If you have doubts about your comment don't post.
4) Don't give more than one suggestion and if you can couch it as a question.
5) Be encouraging. Use the Golden Rule as your measure of effective criticism.
6) Learn to both take and leave criticism. Listen to what Paul had to say about advice he got on his poetry from beat poet Alan Ginzburg. Find your own voice.

If you're an aspiring teen writer or are really into YA fiction, I strongly recommend checking out InkPop.com. It's run by Harper Collins and the user base is super interactive, but the best part is real HPC editors are reviewing your work which means your scribbles could get published if its good enough. It's fiction, non-fiction and poetry--everything goes and the features are slick.

Kids need to know we suffer the same joys and pangs of writing they do. So yes I share my writing frequently.

Has anyone here been brave enough to use one of their own works of writing in a lesson? For the first nine weeks, we are covering short stories and fiction. In a bold move, I chose to read one of my stories, "Fortune's Fool" (see above) to the class and use it to teach the elements of plot, as well as some literary terms (foreshadowing, simile, metaphor, etc.) I'm just curious if anyone else has done this.

Even grammarian editors can kill the voice of the writer. Saul Bellow said he never followed the rule on "that" and "which". He used the one that sounded best.

Paul makes a good point. I'm currently rereading William Strong's Coaching Writing, The Power of Guided Practice, to me the quintessential guide for giving feedback to any writer.
